this arched niche (approximate measurements h.0.38, w.0.40, d.0.25, height above floor 1.20) was described by Sogliano as la nicchietta dei Penati, in Not. Scavi, 1896, 437.

According to Mau –

In this rear room, other than a mouth of a cistern there was a stairway (north to south) for upper rooms.

Regarding this, we need to observe that the rooms on the ground floor did not all have the same height and therefore not everyone believes that there would have been rooms above them.
